The Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad Train
travels from Meredith NH along Meredith Bay clinging to a shelf dug out over 100 years ago for the fast Montreal trains that passed through here. It is a downhill ride most of the way from Meredith to Weirs Beach. Shortly we pass through an area with an unobstructed view of the lake with Mt Belknap in the background. Now we are on a level with the lake and shortly we arrive at Weirs Beach, home of the MV MT Washington. Formerly a summer colony for tourist who would ride up from Boston on the Boston and Maine Railroad where they could disembark to continue their trip along the lake using the the railroad owned steamship, or stay at one of the Weirs Beach Grand Hotels. Now the area is occupied by arcades, amusements and food establishments and is the centerpoint of the Annual Laconia Motorcycle Week event started and held each year since 1923.
After a brief stop to pick up passengers, we continue our ride to Lakeport
all the way along the
shore of "Paugus Bay" past seasonal residences on the right of the train with the cool blue water of Paugus Bay on the left. Several Marinas are passed through as well as the one mile shoreline of "Southdown Shores", a gated condominium complex. This complex has one mile of shore line on the lake. We pass through their marina and beach area waving to residents and their friends and arrive at Lakeport the turning point of the ride. There is no station here so passengers relax on board while our engine crew disconnects the locomotive from the trains so it can run around the train.
This is a good moment to visiit our
Ice Cream and Food Service Car
that is on the north end of the train beside the caboose. Inside you will find a rest room, ice cream, snacks, soft drinks, gfts and of course our famous "Hobo Picnic Lunch".
Lakeport is the only water outlet from the lake. From here all the water flows over a small dam in Laconia/Lakeport to Lake Winnisquam then to Silver Lake in Belmont NH, through Tilton, Franklin where it joins the Pemigewassett to become the Merrimack. From here the Merrimack River travels through the old New England former mill cities of Manchester and Nashua NH. then passes into Massachusetts near Lowell and continues through Lawrence, Haverhill, Merrimack and finally passes through the fishing town of Newburyport, MA. before it empties into the Atlantic Ocean at Plum Island. After leaving Lakeport we travel the few miles back to Weirs Beach. We stop to handle passengers at the Weirs Beach Station on the Boardwalk, we then leave for the return up the shore towards Meredith. This is at the top of the lake and is the turning point for our train. The locomotive will run around the train and couple to the other end so it can so it can then repeat the trip to Weirs, Lakeport and to Meredith. We offer a
History
page for those that are interested in the heritage of the railroad line as well as a page on Lake Winnnipesaukeee
